All Fools Day

April 1st isknown as All Fools Day and the reason why isn't exactly known. It wasn't as if one day some government enacted a law on a whim that one this one day people could make fools of other people. Like many traditions, it evolved. There was a big bang and all these little ideas were swimming around until they found try land and then they crawled ashore and became fools.

The most likely cause of the moniker was the fact the April 1 was once New Year's Dayand some people had a hard time accepting that so they continued to celebrate April 1 as the first day of the year. I can understand that for it would be hard to adjust if suddenly we were told that August first would be the first day of the new year. Maybe we would have people we called january fools.

I have no idea who thought January first would make a good day to start a new year but it really isn't. It's almost the beginning of winter and it's cold, gray, and dreary outside. April makes more sense. It's near the beginning of spring when the earth begins to warm and plants bloom and begin again to grow and produce. The renewing of spirit and life.

So you tell me who is the bigger fool: the people who thought the dead of winter to be the best time to start a new year or the people who refused to give up the idea that Spring was the renewing of life?
