Maybe i'm too old to remember

I suppose there have always been politics mixed up with the Olympics, at least to some degree, but the incidents in the past seemed to revolve around national and international situations.  There was the black power fist in Mexico, the boycotts by the USSR and the USA the following Olympics and of course the gunning down of the Israeli team but is seems like in recent Olympics, particularly this one, political statements and controversies seem to be more out front than the competitors are.

It is a shame that people can't get together amd compete and play and have fun without politics being involved.  I don't suppose bringing it up or even complaining about it will make a difference anyway but would  not it be nice just to watch the games and have a few moments to escape everyday life and not have  problems highlighted by the sporting events?
